Craven District Council, with Pioneer Projects, is seeking an artist to deliver
The Darwin Project in Bentham

Craven Museum and Gallery wishes to complement its collection of geologically important fossils with contemporary art work and, at the same time, reach new audiences.

Job Summary

Inspired by the fossils, the artist will:

  • Plan and deliver four half-day workshops in Bentham with a group of men from the surrounding area. It is expected that work from the workshops will be included in a Darwin exhibition at the end of January at Craven Museum & Gallery, Skipton. The artist will be paid £450 to plan and deliver all workshops and assemble (with two other artists) the final exhibition at Craven Museum & Gallery.

  • Complete a commissioned artwork for retention by Craven Museum and Gallery for the Darwin exhibition and subsequently as part of its collection. It is expected that the commission will take at least 5 days – remuneration is £750. There is a small materials budget.

We are seeking a professional 3D/sculpture artist who lives and/or works in the Craven area and is available to work on the project between November 2009 and January 2010. The artist will require experience of contemporary participatory practice coupled with high quality delivery of commissions within tight deadlines.

The project will be delivered in partnership with Pioneer Projects within the context of their Arts and Health Training Project. The commissioned artist will deliver the work in dialogue with Pioneer Projects about their training and support needs.

Application Process

  • Submission of an artist’s statement, CV, at least 6 images of work by email, by 4pm Thursday 15 October

  • Successful candidates will be contacted on Monday 19 October

  • Shortlisted artists will be asked to attend an interview at Looking Well in Bentham to present the way in which they would approach the brief on Thursday 22 October
