History
Pioneer Projects
(Celebratory Arts) Ltd is a charity and a company limited by guarantee
established in 1996 by a group of artists previously trading as Celebratory
Arts for Primary Health Care. Alison Jones, John Angus and Mary Robson
pioneered innovative projects working with GP’s, health and social care
professionals, schools and communities in deprived urban settings addressing
smoking and clean air (West Midlands from 1988); coronary heart disease
(Gateshead, from 1991) and diabetes (Liverpool, including ethnic communities,
from 1992). The artists became the founder members of the company and
identified a board of trustees with representatives from both
arts and health backgrounds. In 1997, following an arts led health needs
assessment, Looking Well was set up as an arts based Healthy Living
Centre to serve the market town of Bentham and since 2000, activities
have extended across Craven. In 1999, the project was awarded the prestigious
SmithKline Beecham IMPACT Award for excellence in community health,
and became one of the first Healthy Living Centres funded by the New
Opportunities Fund.
In 2005 the
company moved into Looking Well Studios– a newly converted former
warehouse in the heart of the town. Looking Well Studios serves as
the base for the range of existing programmes of arts and health
work, and provides workspaces for people working in creative
industries, community education and training
